The 5 Steps to Going Pro in Soccer (Even If You’re Starting Late)

By NLPSD | For Players & Parents Who Dream Bigger

If you're starting later than others or feel behind in your soccer journey, this is for you. The truth is, going pro isn’t about being the most naturally gifted player — it’s about doing the right things consistently, and starting now.

Whether you're 13 or 19, here are 5 clear steps you can start today to chase the pro level — no matter where you're starting from.

Start where you are. Work with what you have.
Start where you are. Work with what you have.

Step 1: Master the Ball (Technical Training Consistently)

Pro players don’t just play — they command the ball. If you’re starting late, the number one equalizer is technical ability. That means ball mastery, tight control, passing precision, and decision-making under pressure.

Consistent technical work is a must:

  • 20–30 mins of ball mastery drills

  • 1v1 moves on both feet

  • Wall passing, first-touch control

  • Weak foot development

“Technical players last longer in the game — they don’t rely on speed, they rely on quality.”

Step 2: Build Your Game IQ

It's not just what you do on the ball — it’s when, why, and how. If you’re serious about going pro, you need to understand the game like a coach.

That means:

  • Watching full matches (not just highlights)

  • Analyzing your own play

  • Understanding positioning, pressing, rotations

  • Learning from mistakes — not just repeating them

“Tactical players are coachable players. Coaches notice who thinks ahead.”

Step 3: Train Your Mind Like a Pro

Most players quit, choke under pressure, or self-sabotage. The ones who succeed have mental strength.

That includes:

  • Confidence under pressure

  • A clear identity and purpose

  • Discipline to train when no one is watching

  • Handling setbacks without spiraling

“The gap between who you are and who you could be is filled by your mindset.”

Step 4: Get Exposure (Don’t Wait to Be Found)

You might be the best player on your team — but if the right people don’t see you, it doesn’t matter. Today, you have to create your own opportunities.

Steps to take:

  • Film your games and build a highlight reel

  • Reach out to colleges, clubs, and scouts yourself

  • Attend ID camps or trial events

  • Post training and match content on social (Instagram, TikTok, etc.)

“You're not just a player anymore — you're a brand. And exposure is part of the job.”

Step 5: Get a Mentor — Don’t Do This Alone

The fastest way to go pro? Learn from someone who’s already there. A mentor keeps you accountable, gives feedback, and helps you avoid wasting years on the wrong things.

Think about it:

  • Would you rather figure everything out alone over 5 years…

  • Or get there in 1–2 with guidance?

“Every pro has a coach. You don’t need to wait until you ‘make it’ to get one.”

Final Thoughts: You’re Not Behind — You’re Just Getting Started

Going pro isn’t about when you started. It’s about how intentional you are now. Start training like a pro, thinking like a pro, and surrounding yourself with pros — and you'll be shocked at how fast you can level up.
